Visible mold growth is the most obvious sign of mold damage in your home, but what about the less obvious signs? Learning to identify many different indicators of a mold problem can help you address the issue as soon as possible, mitigating risks and protecting your family’s health.

Here are a few lesser-known signs of mold damage to be on the lookout for:
- Increase in allergy symptoms. Exposure to mold can cause an increase in allergy symptoms, especially in people who have preexisting respiratory problems. These symptoms include coughing, sneezing, headaches, and more. If you’ve recently noticed frequent allergy symptoms that worsen at home, you may have hidden mold growth.
- Black spots on fabrics. Since mold grows and thrives in darker environments, you may not see it growing in hard-to-reach areas, such as the back of your closet. These spaces tend to be dark and obscured by clothing, towels, and other items. If clothes, blankets, and other fabrics stored in your closet start showing black spots, this is likely the result of mold damage.
- Unusual smells from your furniture. Mold can grow within your furniture. Because you can’t easily see inside your furniture, the easiest way to recognize mold growth here is by smell. Pay attention to a musty odor coming from your couch, especially if stored in a basement or attic. This could be a sign of mold growth.
