The damage isn’t the visible mold. It’s the materials it ate.

Most Raleigh homeowners reach out about mold damage when something visible has finally surfaced — a soft baseboard, a sagging ceiling tile, drywall paper releasing from the gypsum core. The room is usually further along than the homeowner expects. The cavity behind it is even further than that.

Raleigh’s mid-century housing stock is part of the issue. Older lumber holds moisture longer than modern kiln-dried framing. Crawlspace ventilation that was code in 1965 fights modern HVAC, and humid summers do the rest.

Damage restoration is a different scope from remediation. Remediation cleans the contamination. Restoration replaces what the contamination took, dries surviving structure, and documents every material decision for your insurer.

Where projects fail

Three failure modes we redo every month.

When a homeowner calls us in to fix someone else’s rebuild, this is the short list.

01

Mid-century framing degrades faster than newer lumber.

Raleigh's older neighborhoods have framing milled before kiln-drying was standard. Once those joists and sill plates absorb moisture, they hold it longer and degrade faster — and the structural scope expands once the wall is open.

02

Without documentation, the insurance scope shrinks.

Mold sub-limits in NC are typically $5,000 to $10,000. Adjusters cut what isn't on paper. We document moisture readings, photos, lab results, and material lists from day one so the scope holds through to payout.

03

Rebuilds over wet wood guarantee a callback.

The most common reason we re-bid someone else's project: drywall hung before the framing dried back to standard. Six to twelve months later, the colony returns, and so does the scope.

Our approach

From the first walkthrough to the final punch list.

Four phases, documented at each step. The schedule and the cost are written down before the first piece of drywall comes off.

  1. 01

    Damage scope assessment

Material-by-material grading: drywall, framing, insulation, subfloor, contents. Moisture readings logged, photos taken, written scope delivered before any demolition starts.

  2. 02

    Demolition of unsalvageable material

Containment built, negative pressure pulled, HEPA scrubbers running. Affected porous materials are removed under controlled conditions to keep cross-contamination contained.

  3. 03

    Structural drying

Air movers and commercial dehumidifiers bring framing back to dry standard. Daily moisture readings — you'll see the numbers, not just take our word for it.

  4. 04

    Restoration build-back

Drywall, insulation, flooring, paint, trim, cabinetry — coordinated alongside the moisture-source repair so the conditions that produced the damage can't return.

★★★★★
We bought a new to us 1964 home last December and to no surprise, we had asbestos popcorn ceilings. We decided to remove the ceilings altogether versus just scraping them. To complicate things even more, we had a plumbing leak in a room that had previously been encapsulated, so we had to deal with insurance to cover a portion of the asbestos removal. Rusty and the whole team at Remtech were such a help from the first moment we spoke! They were responsive, flexible, and knowledgeable. They helped us get insurance what they needed. They even worked with us to do the removal work while we had to be out of town. Asbestos removal and dealing with insurance, especially as we were brand new to the home, was incredibly stressful. Working with Remtech was the opposite – they were helpful and easy to work with that I barely had to think about the work being done. It was a nice break for my brain! They also did a great job. We came home to a CLEAN house with no ceilings! While I’m hoping we never have to go through such a big project again, I know we’d be able to handle it because we can rely on Remtech.

A few months ago I used Remtech Envir. to remove asbestos from the ceiling of my home, and to this day I’m still amazed with their service that I’ve been meaning to write a review, and today’s the day! The whole process went through so smoothly because of their professionalism, punctuality and care. At the end of each day I received an update from Rusty who was the project manager which was super helpful, and because of their expertise I knew the job was getting done correctly. There was a lot of asbestos to remove, and they showed up and delivered hard work to get it done within the time frame that was initially discussed. So grateful we used their services! I would highly recommend!

Our church basement flooded and the old asbestos tiles curled up and had to be removed. Jeff Brewer came over to look at our problem, explained what they would do. He furnished a quote very quickly with a fair price. After checking with two other companies, Jeff’s instructive conversation, ease of manner, willingness to help and a fair price won him the work. As a former contractor, I know how backed up companies can be in their schedule. He told us of a target time about 4-6 weeks off, which was fine. He called a couple of weeks later and had an opening in his schedule and wanted to come earlier. That was great. Their staff arrived on time and delivered a very quick, professional and clean project. This allowed us to get our Fellowship Hall floored and back in operating condition prior to the start of the school year. It is a pleasure to work with a company that communicates well and delivers their service in a superior way.

Remtech came in and did a removal of asbestos when our home developed a leak and the sheetrock ceiling had to be removed. Got right to work, kept us informed every step of the way and did a great job of cleaning up. Would use them again in a heart beat!!

The cost was higher than expected, so I did not move forward at that time. I will use Remtech when I am ready to have the work done. They are very professional and take the time to answer any questions. The rep arrived on time, explained the process and provided the estimate. A very positive experience.

Frequently asked

Plain answers, no upsell.

Five questions we field every week. The longer answers happen on a walkthrough — in the room, with the materials in front of us.

How is mold damage different from mold remediation?

Remediation is the contamination work — containment, removal, antimicrobial treatment. Damage restoration is what comes after: replacing materials too compromised to clean, drying surviving structure, and rebuilding the room. On most Raleigh projects we do both, scoped and priced separately so the line items are transparent.

Will my homeowners insurance cover damage restoration?

If the underlying water source is a covered, sudden event — pipe burst, appliance failure, storm-driven roof leak — typically yes, with a mold sub-limit between $5,000 and $10,000 on most NC policies. Long-term seepage, deferred maintenance, and chronic humidity are usually excluded. We document the moisture source thoroughly so the claim is defensible.

Do you handle the reconstruction yourselves?

Yes. Remediation and rebuild are held under one team. You don't have to coordinate three subcontractors on overlapping schedules — and the rebuild only starts after structural drying and post-remediation verification confirm the area is ready.

What about my contents and furniture?

Hard, non-porous goods are HEPA-vacuumed and antimicrobial-treated on site. Soft goods — upholstered furniture, mattresses, fabric storage — are evaluated case by case; some respond to professional cleaning, others are documented as total losses for the claim. We never dispose of contents without your written authorization.

When is it safe for my family to move back in?

After post-remediation verification. Clearance air samples are collected, compared to outdoor controls, and a written PRV report is provided. The certificate is the answer — not 'it looks clean.' Until that report is in your hand, the room isn't signed off.
