You likely know that asbestos is a harmful material that is not used commonly in homes anymore. However, there are many structures still existing that contain asbestos, which pose health risks.
There are some things you can look for to determine whether or not your home may require asbestos removal.
- An Older Building. Asbestos has not been commonly used in home construction in decades. Your home’s risk of containing asbestos is low if it was built after 1985. If your home is older, it may be worth making sure it isn’t present.
- Popcorn Ceilings. Though popcorn ceilings are installed today without asbestos, older popcorn ceilings were commonly made using the substance. Because of asbestos’s popularity within popcorn ceilings, if your older home has them, you may need asbestos removal.
- Vinyl or Linoleum Floors. Flooring installed prior to 1985, especially if made from vinyl or linoleum, commonly contained asbestos. Asbestos was used as an adhesive backing material, as well as to add a glossy finish to the top of these materials.
- Pipe Wrap and Insulation. Asbestos was used as insulator for piping up until the late 1970’s. Similarly, it was used as home insulation, much in the same way we see fiberglass used today. Some insulation materials have also been found to have been contaminated with asbestos before installation. If you have an older home with insulation or pipe wrap, you may need asbestos removal.
